The U.S.S. Cyane was launched December 2, 1837. During the Mexican-American War she carried John C. Fremont's California Battalion to San Diego, La Paz, and Mazatlan before returning to Norfolk in 1848. The Cyane was decommissioned in 1871. George Clymer, a Naval surgeon, was assigned to the sloop-of-war Cyane, part of the Pacific Squadron under Commodore Thomas Ap Catesby Jones. The Cyane left Norfolk, sailed around Cape Horn, and joined Jones in taking possession of Monterey, California in October, 1842, under the mistaken assumption that the United States was at war with Mexico.
